Too Busy in the Morning for a Full Skin Care Routine?
If you are like most people, you have not enough time in the morning already especially to start doing a full skin care routine. But I have good news for you…
Instead of doing your skin care routine in the morning, do it at night! Plus if you follow the five suggested steps below, it will only take you about five minutes to complete.
By following these steps, you can make big improvements in your skin no matter if you are trying to get rid of acne or prevent breakouts from occurring, reducing fine lines and/or wrinkles, or dull and dry skin.
You do not need to do all of these nightly, but you will see great results the more time you can put into your nightly skin care routine and you will be happy you did. But even if you can only do the cleanse each night, you will start to see some great results.
Here are the five steps to follow:
It's the obvious first step, we know, but so often we fall into bed after a long day and don't really think it's a huge deal if we skip a night or two of face washing, especially if you wear a certain mineral makeup that tells you it's safe to sleep in. But the reality is, your skin has been put through a lot during the day.
Do you know how many times you touch your face each day? (And who knows what else you touched before you touched your face!) Your skin's natural oils build up, dry skin cells have shed, your makeup is sitting on the surface; when you really think about what has happened to your skin throughout the day, it's hard to crawl into bed without washing. If you're counting the minutes to make sure we stop at five, there is good news here, depending on what exfoliator you're using; many exfoliating products should only be used two or three times a week. You could use a grainy manual exfoliator if you'd like, but because we're pressed for time and energy, we recommend going with something like St Ives: Scrub-Free Exfoliating Pads which literally take seconds to use. Simply swipe the wipe on your face and the AHA's will easy exfoliate for you. These pads are gentle enough to use daily and we saw results starting after only a few days.
3. Treatment Product
Now that you've cleansed and exfoliated, it's time to use the treatment products if you need them. Examples of a treatment product would be acne spot treatments, serums or eye creams.
The great part about using these products at night versus the morning is that they have time to work while you're sleeping and you can wake up with results. This is especially true about spot treatments and products with retinol or other anti-aging ingredients. Though if your eye cream is one of those that diminish eye wrinkles for a short period like Eye Freeze 24-7, don't use it at night. You'll just waste it.
Don't hit the hay without a dose of moisture. Unless you have very oily skin, you should always moisturize after washing, as soon after washing as possible. Your skin can easily get dehydrated while you sleep, so your last step should always be a moisturizer. Night time moisturizers typically do more for in the anti-aging department than day time moisturizers, so if you're seeing fine lines and wrinkles creeping in, it's time to find a good night cream.(And there you go! Less than 5 minutes.)
5. Sleeping Position
If you're a belly sleeper, you might deal with puffy eyes and morning face creases. Over time and with repeated creasing, fine lines get deeper. In an interview about crow's feet with NYC Dermatologist Dr. Neal Shultz, he explains, “To get an idea of how wrinkles form, picture a paperclip. When you bend that paperclip back and forth and back and forth, after a while, the paperclip will break. This is the same with your skin. Repetitive motions that cause creases in your skin will break the collagen and elastic fibers in your skin and cause wrinkles anywhere on the face, not just around the eyes.”
