Guilty Or Not: Summer Danger?

Having fun can bring some hazards. Do you know how to keep your loved one safe this summer? Be informed about those hazards that can come from too much sun. Below are some great tips for more enjoyment without experiencing the hazards that Summer weekends can bring.
First know what the days temperatures will be and avoid being outside for prolonged periods of time during the hottest part of the day which is usually between 1 and 4 pm. Stay hydrated by drinking water often, enough so that you have to pee at least every 2 hours. Too much sun excitement during these times of day, even if it is overcast, can bring on mild symptoms of nausea, dizziness, headaches and confusion. If any of these symptoms are experienced, drink fluids, seek shade and apply a cool wet towel to the back of your neck. For more severe symptoms such as joint aches, throbbing headache, chills, and weakness along with (no body moisture to sweat) and a weak pulse. Get inside if possible and drink fluids until you pee and begin to sweat again. Heat stroke involves all of these symptoms plus an internal temperature of 103 or more and can be fatal. Other signs of heat stroke can be nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. To get the core body temp down use ice packs under the arm pits and at the groin and seek medical attention.

Sun burns are all too common during the summer and Many people think that a base tan will protect them from both sunburns and skin cancer but that is just not true. Color change brought on by a base tan indicates your skin has produced some melanin but it does not protect you from the UV radiation that is most responsible for sunburn. Practicing good sun protection is key to avoiding sun burn so apply and re apply lotion with at least an SPF of 30 is essential to limit the damage that the sun can have on the skin.
In a quote from Dr. Mc Stay, “Having a sunburn is uncomfortable and painful,” Mc Stay said. “And the chronic risk of sun exposure and skin cancer is something to think about every day.” In 2013, there were nearly 34,000 emergency room visits in the U.S. due to serious sunburns, according to recent research in Dermatology. Go to the doctor if your sunburn results in blistering or is accompanied by nausea, confusion, headache, extreme pain or chills. You should also head to the doctor if at-home remedies such as applying aloe Vera or taking a pain reliever like ibuprofen does not help after a couple of days. But even if you can take care of your burn at home, it’s an uncomfortable mishap that’s easy to avoid.

Yes…but most woman work out with a face full of makeup and well …that’s bad and even harmful. The gym is a place to get your heart rate up, build muscles and sweat. But all of a sudden gyms are meeting places and social gathering places where…gulp, other people are and we don’t want to look our absolute worst but is this habit undermining the health of our skin? Read on to learn what dermatologist recommend to look your best while your slick with sweat and gasping for breath.

Before going to the gym do you apply just a little foundation, eye shadow and mascara or maybe small touch up coming from work? Woman want to look good while they hit the gym, we all have done it but according to doctors this could be doing real harm to your skin.
Dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll, of Compass Dermatology states, “There are lots of reasons why people want to wear makeup at the gym.” follow by “If sweat gets trapped under the makeup it can increase the risk of acne-which is the most prominent thing and sometimes, possible infection, but that is not as common. She adds “the gym is a social place and if they really want to put their best face forward they should cleanse their face, reapply the makeup then workout. In addition Dr. Carroll says “make sure you give your face a good wash or use a cleansing cloth directly after”

Yuck, that can be so bad for many reason. Plus if you have make up on and go to rub off the sweat the makeup comes off too and then you have half a face that is smeared and half not. Dr’s Ask, Are You Spreading Bacteria?

Getting into a nightly routine and sticking with it is one powerful way to develop healthy habits. But are you doing the right routine for your skin type?

 Dr. O’Brien gives us and her patients some good advice on what to do, when to do it and how to best care for the first defense our bodies have, the skin. Does that sound like something you want to know about? The read on.
Exfoliating every week is one of the best things you can do for your skin to accelerate collagen growth and dead cell turn over. In case you don’t know, exfoliation is the process of sloughing off dead skin cells which allows new smooth, healthy cells to take their place. It also banishes dry, flaky cells, keeps pores clean and clears bacteria from your pours which is key in leaving the skin looking and feeling great.
Knowing your skin type isn’t just important when it comes to picking the right exfoliation process, it’s essential. People with drier, more sensitive skin should only exfoliate once to twice a week max. Those with less sensitive skin types may exfoliate nightly or every other day. Try out a routine and pay attention to how your skin reacts. If there are any signs of irritation, skip a few days till the skin has recovered and once you begin again try every other day or every third day. And always use a mild PH balanced cleanser for whatever your skin type is. This type of self monitoring is key for skin health.
Dr. O’Brien warns, “Over-exfoliating can lead to compromising the skin’s barrier function, leaving it susceptible to further irritation, redness, and dryness.”

It is important to note that the facial cleansing system tools used widely by those doing at home facial must be cleaned after every use and stored in a dry sterile place (facial brush, body brush, sponge, and pumice stone if your kit has one). Dr. O’Brien says in her interview “Bacteria grow easily on these items, and instead of doing good for your skin, you’ll end up just spreading that bacteria,” she explains. Run your fingers through all the bristles to remove any debris left, then rinse away all residue, allowing the brush to air dry completely before the next use. If you’re not doing this you are spreading harmful bacteria and it will compromise the skin barrier.
As important as exfoliating itself is following up with a good moisturizer. “After exfoliating, skin is extra sensitive,” explains Dr. O’Brien, who explains that a heavier cream is for someone with more sensitive or drier types of skin are very good, but for oilier skin and in warmer weather, “a lighter lotion or serum may be enough,” she says.
The Dr. also tells us to remember that it’s vital to incorporate sunscreen into a healthy skin regiment. “Always wear sunscreen during the day and replenish every few hours.”
