Learn How Nature Can Heal, From The Inside Out.

This plant is an herb and belongs to the same family as the tomato, it is a plump shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers. It bears red fruit about the size of a raisin. The herb is native to the dry regions of India, northern Africa, and the Middle East, and today is also grown in more mild climates, including the United States. It contains many useful medicinal chemicals such as steroidal lactones, alkaloids, choline, fatty acids, amino acids, and a variety of sugars but the root of the plant is most commonly used in herbal remedies.

The Ashwagandha herb is what is called an Adaptogen herb. Adaptogens not only increase the resistance to the adverse effects of long-term stress but also it is an immune-stimulating and increase general sense of well-being. A multitude of other benefits are, improves learning, memory, and reaction time, Helps reduce brain-cell degeneration, stabilizes blood sugar, helps lower cholesterol and offers anti-inflammatory benefits as well.
Ashwagandha means ‘Smell of Horse,’ which refers to the fresh root’s distinct horsey smell, and the traditional belief that ingesting the herb will confer the strength and virility of a horse. It is frequently referred to as “Indian ginseng” because of its rejuvenating properties but it is botanically unrelated.
Medical researchers have been studying Ashwagandha for years with great interest and have completed more than 200 studies on the healing benefits of this botanical. The lowest effective dose of Ashwagandha, and perhaps the most cost-effective dose, is 300-500 mg. The optimal dose is 6,000 mg a day usually divided into three doses (2,000 mg) and while 300-500 mg is effective for most situations a lower dose of 50-100 mg has been seen as effective.

Although Ashwagandha is safe for most people, certain individuals shouldn’t use it unless authorized by their doctor. Always contact your doctor before starting a new health supplement.

It also is well tolerated by children and effective in improving attention, cognition and impulse control (ADHD) along with managing Dyslexia. This herb has many more healing properties being found every day.

Natural Plant Based Boosts For The Body

This plant grows in Russia and is readily available all over the world. When the root is ingested it has a wide variety of uses such as to strengthen the body’s immunity and it helps naturally resist the negative effects of daily stress. In addition it is used for conditions of the heart, blood vessels such as low blood pressure, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and chronic bronchitis.

It has also been used for kidney disease, Alzheimer’s, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, flu, colds, tuberculosis  and to boost the immune system, treat sleep problems and lesson the symptoms of infections caused by herpes simplex type 2. In addition this plant has been used for treating the side effects of chemotherapy. So what is this great all natural plant? It is Siberian Ginseng.

The chemicals in Siberian Ginseng affects the brain, immune system and even some of our bodies hormones. In some studies it has show to be effective in combating some bacteria and viruses, even the common cold.

• Source: (Kan Jang, Swedish Herbal Institute) by mouth improves symptoms of the common cold when started within 72 hours of symptom onset Some symptoms can improve after 2 days of treatment. However, it generally takes 4-5 days of treatment for the maximum benefit. Some research suggests this combination of Siberian Ginseng and Andrographis relieves cold symptoms in children better than Echinacea.

In trial studies for the disorder, Bipolar, taking Siberian Ginseng along with Lithium by mouth for 6 weeks appeared to induce the same response as patients taking Lithium and Fluoxetine.

For the viral infection called herpes simplex 2 (HSV-2). Taking a specific Siberian Ginseng extract, standardized to contain a specific Ginseng ingredient called eleutheroside 0.3% (Elagen), seems to reduce the number, severity, and duration of herpes simplex type 2 infections.

Though this herb has been studied there is still so much that we don’t know about it and its side effect so before you start a course of this natural immune booster consult with a doctor.

Some of the side effect that studies have shown thought they are rare are drowsiness, change in heart rhythm, decrease blood sugar levels, sadness, anxiety, muscle spasms and in high doses, increased blood pressure along with the possibility of slowed blood clotting.

It has also been observed that with hormone sensitive conditions such as cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibrosis Siberian Ginseng might act like Estrogen. With the studies most adults when taken by mouth or injected over long term proved to be safe but little to no studies have been done on teens / children and pregnant or breast-feeding woman so with these groups Siberian Ginseng is not recommended.

Small Changes for Big Results

Taking small steps has been proven to be a very effective way to reach large goals. We all want to reduce the risk of early death, to make dramatic impacts for the better to our diet and health. These mini goals are doable and powerful motivators that single the brain you are on the right track, keep going. Large goals can be imitating and we quite because it seems to be impossible but it can be broken into micro changes to your menu which has been shown by Harvard researchers to greatly reduce the rate people fail.

Here are some micro steps to take in the search for long run health impact to your body.

Whole grains reduced the risk of death from all causes by 16% in 14 different case studies. In heart disease the risk dropped to 18% and in cancer it dropped to 12% lower. Whole grain-eaters deduce their chances of early death just by this micro step.

Eating more product is another small positive change. By adding one serving per day to your diet you reduce the risk of heart disease by 4%. This also has beauty boosting benefits such as reducing acne, boosting immunity and giving the skin a healthy glow.

Going meatless once a week can put you at lower risk of unwanted conditions like heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes. A one-day-a-week vegetarian is simple, swap yogurt for eggs at breakfast, a sugar free smoothie at lunch or a salad for dinner.

Change yogurt to plain, unsweetened yogurt instead of the sugar added kind is a great way to lessen your sugar intake. Add a little sweetness by adding berries and fruit for a double benefit to a micro change.

Get a little nuts. They are crunchy, delicious and satisfying where refined carbs, like pretzels and chips have a negative impact on your health, nuts have a positive impact on your health.

Red meat and the risk. The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recommends eating no more than 18 ounces of red meat each week, and limiting other processed meats. Protein is a requirement for maintaining all of the body’s tissues — muscle, blood vessels, skin, etc. — and hormones, you can meet these needs with plant proteins alone.

Seafood and omega. Because seafood is a prime source of omega-3 fatty acids, and there is evidence that these fish fats can lower triglyceride levels, lead to blood pressure improvements and slow the rate of dangerous plaque formation in the arteries. Other research shows they may also play a role in reducing anxiety and preventing other mood disorders.

These small mini changes can add up to big health improvement and add time to your life. You don’t have to do all of them at once, try on a week to start and then slowly add in those that resonate with you personally.

Outward Sign Of Inner Happiness

It is the small things that we do day in and day out that affect the quality of our lives in the long run. Getting enough sleep, eating health, daily exercise and so many other healthy habits that if developed while we are young, keep our bodies in the best possible shape.

One of those small things is brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing every night. It is vital to our health and most people don’t even know it. Brushing our teeth twice daily is not just for a white smile but for health as periodontal disease range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost. Read on as professionals weigh in on how, when and what methods to use for that bright, happy smile.
Brushing (morning and night) and flossing (nightly) are vital to preserve your smile. Many people don’t understand correct brushing technique, says Nancy Newhouse, a periodontist in Independence, Missouri, and president of the American Academy of Periodontist. “Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, so the bristles can reach under the gum line and remove plaque (a colorless film of bacteria that coats teeth). Brush for two minutes, and don’t forget the backs of teeth.” She also stated. “Flossing daily is as important as brushing. Grip the floss in a “C” shape, pulling it firmly to scrape off plaque and reach gently under the gum line.”

Sometime our smile is not a bright and white as we would wish, there are many factors to why our teeth get stained, but they don’t have to stay that way. Another Doctor adds to our conversation on a healthy smile by telling us about the stains that can happen to our teeth.
Surface stains are usually caused by coffee, tea, wine or tobacco, while deeper stains are often due to medications, injury or infection. Depending on the type and degree of staining, some people get good results from store-bought whitening products. “Be sure products are ADA-approved, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions—overuse of whiteners can damage tooth enamel and underlying dentin,” says William DeVizio, DMD, a licensed dentist and vice president of dental clinical research at Colgate-Palmolive. Professional whitening treatments at your dentist’s office can be pricey, but the results are often more impressive and can last up to 3 years.

Do you blow your top at family and friends and know that it’s not them … but you? Are you dealing with tension headache, upset stomach, fatigue or loss of appetite?

Well it really could be all from stress. Stress in our busy world is real no getting around it.  With work, family, and outside commitments the pressure to preform and get the job done can make a day feel like a week and its true that the right amount of stress can be helpful. It encourages us to get that project done or to train for that up coming marathon but if you stay awake at night worrying about it and feel like you’re always mad, sad and angry…then you may be internalizing your stress and it may be trigging you in ways you don’t want it to.
The number one way to help manage stress is getting more sleep, as sleep is the single most important step you can take in fighting off infection, boosting your metabolism and keeping your body healthy, this one thing does the body good. The recommended 8 hours a night keeps your body in tune and working at top notch to help fight off stress and other diseases but there are time in life that 8 hours of sleep is a dream. Can you relate? Below are some other tips and tricks recommended by doctors for dealing with those things that bring on the negative feelings in your mind and what to do about them.
Read on to learn more tips for managing stress.

  Tips for Managing Stress
Find the source of your stress: Once you know what’s causing your discomfort, you can take steps to deal with it. So identify the stress you have at work, at home, and in your relationships.
Get support: Spending time with people who care about you is a key buffer. You can confide in each other or do things that are fun.
Practice having healthy thoughts: What you think, how you think, and what you expect out of situations can affect how you feel. You can learn to change stressful thinking. One common mistake is to focus on the way things “should” be. (Example: “I should be more productive around the house.”) Another mistake is to make broad statements based on one small fact. (Example: “I’m failing at my job because I had one food splurge.”) Many books can teach you how to improve your self-talk. Certain types of counseling, including cognitive behavioral therapy, can help you focus on more empowering thoughts, too.
Get moving: Exercise eases stress by letting you blow off tension. Flexible muscles are also less likely to become tense when you’re stressed. If you have a medical condition, are over age 45, or haven’t been active for a while, it’s best to check with your doctor before starting an exercise routine, so you know what’s OK for you to do.
Eat a better diet: You probably already know how smart it is to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. When you make that shift, you’ll have more energy to handle stress.
Lighten your load: Having too many commitments or responsibilities on your schedule can lead to stress. Start asking others for help, and find ways to free up more of your time.
Take steps to improve your sleep: Set a regular bedtime and waking-up time, and stick to them. Before you go to bed, wind down with meditation or relaxation techniques. Just sitting quietly for a few minutes can make a difference.
If your sleep problems persist, talk to a doctor. They can help you address your stress and help you figure out what’s causing it.

Guilty Or Not: Summer Danger?

Summer time is here and fun time starts this weekend.

Having fun can bring some hazards. Do you know how to keep your loved one safe this summer? Be informed about those hazards that can come from too much sun. Below are some great tips for more enjoyment without experiencing the hazards that Summer weekends can bring.
First know what the days temperatures will be and avoid being outside for prolonged periods of time during the hottest part of the day which is usually between 1 and 4 pm. Stay hydrated by drinking water often, enough so that you have to pee at least every 2 hours. Too much sun excitement during these times of day, even if it is overcast, can bring on mild symptoms of nausea, dizziness, headaches and confusion. If any of these symptoms are experienced, drink fluids, seek shade and apply a cool wet towel to the back of your neck. For more severe symptoms such as joint aches, throbbing headache, chills, and weakness along with (no body moisture to sweat) and a weak pulse. Get inside if possible and drink fluids until you pee and begin to sweat again. Heat stroke involves all of these symptoms plus an internal temperature of 103 or more and can be fatal. Other signs of heat stroke can be nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. To get the core body temp down use ice packs under the arm pits and at the groin and seek medical attention.

Sun burns are all too common during the summer and Many people think that a base tan will protect them from both sunburns and skin cancer but that is just not true. Color change brought on by a base tan indicates your skin has produced some melanin but it does not protect you from the UV radiation that is most responsible for sunburn. Practicing good sun protection is key to avoiding sun burn so apply and re apply lotion with at least an SPF of 30 is essential to limit the damage that the sun can have on the skin.
In a quote from Dr. Mc Stay, “Having a sunburn is uncomfortable and painful,” Mc Stay said. “And the chronic risk of sun exposure and skin cancer is something to think about every day.” In 2013, there were nearly 34,000 emergency room visits in the U.S. due to serious sunburns, according to recent research in Dermatology. Go to the doctor if your sunburn results in blistering or is accompanied by nausea, confusion, headache, extreme pain or chills. You should also head to the doctor if at-home remedies such as applying aloe Vera or taking a pain reliever like ibuprofen does not help after a couple of days. But even if you can take care of your burn at home, it’s an uncomfortable mishap that’s easy to avoid.

We hope this article helps to keep you informed when out in the sun having fun. After all the weekend is here and good times should be fun without the risk.
Please leave comments, question or any tips you have to keep the enjoyment coming while playing outside in the sun.

Are you Getting Your Sweat On In Ignorant Bliss?

Do you indulge in a guilty pleasure that harms your skin? When does working out added with guilty pleasure equally doing you more harm than good? Working out is good, right?

Yes…but most woman work out with a face full of makeup and well …that’s bad and even harmful. The gym is a place to get your heart rate up, build muscles and sweat. But all of a sudden gyms are meeting places and social gathering places where…gulp, other people are and we don’t want to look our absolute worst but is this habit undermining the health of our skin? Read on to learn what dermatologist recommend to look your best while your slick with sweat and gasping for breath.

Before going to the gym do you apply just a little foundation, eye shadow and mascara or maybe small touch up coming from work? Woman want to look good while they hit the gym, we all have done it but according to doctors this could be doing real harm to your skin.
Dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll, of Compass Dermatology states, “There are lots of reasons why people want to wear makeup at the gym.” follow by “If sweat gets trapped under the makeup it can increase the risk of acne-which is the most prominent thing and sometimes, possible infection, but that is not as common. She adds “the gym is a social place and if they really want to put their best face forward they should cleanse their face, reapply the makeup then workout. In addition Dr. Carroll says “make sure you give your face a good wash or use a cleansing cloth directly after”
Source: http://www.torontosun.com

We all want to look our best when out in public but at what risk to our skin? Another source that gives his opinion on wearing makeup at the gym. Is even more bold in his beliefs in staying makeup free and tells us why in the details below.

Andy Millward a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology explains it like this; “Unlike skin care products which are designed to be absorbed into the skin, makeup is designed to sit on the surface of the skin to give it that flawless, airbrushed appearance. ” When we exercise, heat is generated in the body due to an increase in cellular metabolism.” then he said, ” When the skin is warmer, it is more susceptible to product absorption i.e. any makeup that’s sat on the surface will be absorbed easier. This can then lead to an increase in congestion and blockages within the pores.”

Yuck, that can be so bad for many reason. Plus if you have make up on and go to rub off the sweat the makeup comes off too and then you have half a face that is smeared and half not. Not a good look at all…So let your skin be free, rub the sweat from your eyes without mascara on them, and let your natural rosy-cheeked flush shine through. Loving yourselves with and without makeup, at the gym is a great healthy way to let your skin do what it’s supposed to—breathe and sweat and flush out any unwanted toxins that need an easy exit path. Give freedom to your body and your skin will love you for it.
We love to hear from you readers, please leave your comments, questions or concerns and we will get back to you. In addition if you have any tips or trick to looking good while working out add them and share with your fellow female. See you at the gym.

Dr’s Ask, Are You Spreading Bacteria?

Getting into a nightly routine and sticking with it is one powerful way to develop healthy habits. But are you doing the right routine for your skin type?

Dr. O’Brien gives us and her patients some good advice on what to do, when to do it and how to best care for the first defense our bodies have, the skin. Does that sound like something you want to know about? The read on.
Exfoliating every week is one of the best things you can do for your skin to accelerate collagen growth and dead cell turn over. In case you don’t know, exfoliation is the process of sloughing off dead skin cells which allows new smooth, healthy cells to take their place. It also banishes dry, flaky cells, keeps pores clean and clears bacteria from your pours which is key in leaving the skin looking and feeling great.
Knowing your skin type isn’t just important when it comes to picking the right exfoliation process, it’s essential. People with drier, more sensitive skin should only exfoliate once to twice a week max. Those with less sensitive skin types may exfoliate nightly or every other day. Try out a routine and pay attention to how your skin reacts. If there are any signs of irritation, skip a few days till the skin has recovered and once you begin again try every other day or every third day. And always use a mild PH balanced cleanser for whatever your skin type is. This type of self monitoring is key for skin health.
Dr. O’Brien warns, “Over-exfoliating can lead to compromising the skin’s barrier function, leaving it susceptible to further irritation, redness, and dryness.”

It is important to note that the facial cleansing system tools used widely by those doing at home facial must be cleaned after every use and stored in a dry sterile place (facial brush, body brush, sponge, and pumice stone if your kit has one). Dr. O’Brien says in her interview “Bacteria grow easily on these items, and instead of doing good for your skin, you’ll end up just spreading that bacteria,” she explains. Cleaning a brush (like the Youthful Advantage 4 in 1 System) is super simple: use a gentle cleanser like baby shampoo and some hot water (as warm as your hands can handle) get a good lather going. Run your fingers through all the bristles to remove any debris left, then rinse away all residue, allowing the brush to air dry completely before the next use. If you’re not doing this you are spreading harmful bacteria and it will compromise the skin barrier.
As important as exfoliating itself is following up with a good moisturizer. “After exfoliating, skin is extra sensitive,” explains Dr. O’Brien, who explains that a heavier cream is for someone with more sensitive or drier types of skin are very good, but for oilier skin and in warmer weather, “a lighter lotion or serum may be enough,” she says.
The Dr. also tells us to remember that it’s vital to incorporate sunscreen into a healthy skin regiment. “Always wear sunscreen during the day and replenish every few hours.”
We hope this helps you get into a good skin routine. We love to hear from our readers, please feel free to leave comment, question or tips of your own.
